About
ESPN Mexico history, coverage, features
ESPN is an American sports network specializing in sports. It is owned by ESPN, Inc and operated by The Walt Disney Company Latin America. It is available in most Latin American countries. It was initially launched on September 15, 1988 as a test channel, but its official launch came on March 31, 1989.
In order to provide fans across Latin America with the proper kind of content, ESPN has created three different versions of the channel, which are available in certain regions of the continent. ESPN Norte serves North America and the Caribbean, while ESPN Sur provides continent to all South American countries except Chile. The other region-specific channel created by ESPN is ESPN Chile.
ESPN Norte’s broadcast is generated by the channel’s headquarters in Mexico. The channel has made a name for itself with its live sports coverage, which has included disciplines such as football, tennis, basketball, baseball, boxing, cycling, cricket, aquatic sports, extreme sports, motorsports, American football, golf, weight lifting competitions, hockey, rugby, and yachting.
Speaking about football, ESPN Norte has aired international competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the International Champions Cup, and national team competitions such as the Toulon Tournament and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers featuring the USMNT.
Domestic football has also been covered on ESPN Norte, with games for the Italian Serie A, the Belgian First Division, the French Ligue 1, the Scottish Premiership, the Eredivisie, and the Mexican Primera División. Other local tournaments covered by this channel have included the FA Cup, the FA Community Shield, the Coppa Italia, and the French Super Cup.
ESPN Norte was launched as a Standard Definition channel back in the day, but an HD feed was launched in 2009, replacing the SD feed in many regions. A downscaled version of this feed is used to satisfy users who still watch television with a Standard Definition format.
