Preview

One of the greatest derbies in the world returns this weekend, with Manchester United hosting Manchester City in the always-exciting Manchester Derby. These two Premier League giants face off in an 11:30 a.m. ET showdown at Old Trafford as both teams are desperate for the bragging rights and the three points.

Manchester United boast the home advantage but the atmosphere surrounding the home side heading into this game is that of pessimism. The Red Devils might have won three matches in a row in the build-up to this derby but Ten Hag's side remain lackluster on the pitch.

Rashford and Co. beat Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions, which was their first win in Europe this season, but that came courtesy of a unimpressive 1-0 triumph that required Andre Onana to save a last-minute penalty.

Last weekend, Manchester United beat Sheffield United to move within the top half of the table and remain within six points of Man City. However, once again, it came courtesy of an unconvincing performance, with Ten Hag's men triumphing via a one-goal margin yet again.

The game before that was their dramatic 2-1 victory over Brentford, with Scott McTominay's stoppage-time brace ending their losing streak. However, against the Cityzens, the Red Devils cannot afford to be inefficient.

The last time these two sides met at Old Trafford, it was Manchester United that came away with the three points, albeit in a controversial manner — who can forget that "offside" Bruno Fernandes goal? The Red Devils are not yet at their best but neither are the away side and that could play in their hands.

Manchester City beat Brighton last weekend and overcame Young Boys 3-1 during their midweek UEFA Champions League affair. However, while Pep's men could move level on points with second-placed Arsenal with a win, the reigning champions are yet to hit their stride.

Guardiola's men suffered three consecutive domestic defeats in the build-up to the win over Brighton, losing 1-0 to Arsenal and 2-1 to Wolves in the Premier League while being eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Newcastle.

Questions were raised about Erling Haaland and his ability to perform in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne but the Norwegian has responded since, scoring against Brighton and grabbing a brace against Young Boys.

As mentioned earlier, the Cityzens suffered a controversial defeat the last time they visited Old Trafford. While that result ultimately did not cost them the Premier League title, Guardiola's men were left livid by the officiating on that day. Sunday will give them a shot at revenge, and given Manchester United's performances lately, they should enter this tie with confidence.

Team news

Man United: Ten Hag's injury crisis is slowly letting up but the Dutchman is still without Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Amad Diallo, and Tyrell Malacia. Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho remains in exile and is likely to leave this winter or next summer. Casemiro could return from injury in time for this game but the same is unlikely for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Man City: Manuel Akanji is suspended for this tie following his red card in the 2-1 win over Brighton. Kevin de Bruyne, on the other hand, is a long-term absentee. Other than that, Guardiola has no other concerns.
