CONCACAF Nations League - USA vs Mexico

USA vs Mexico - How to watch the CONCACAF Nations League Final on June 6, 2021

June 5, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The Stars and Stripes and El Tri both got to this game without playing their best football. Let's see if facing each other brings out the best in them.

The first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League will finally come to an end this Sunday, when Mexico and the USMNT lock horns at Empower Field in Denver, Colorado. The road to the final was not easy for either side due to trips to Caribbean countries and a pandemic that delayed all games for almost a year. Now, Gregg Berhalter and Gerardo Martino's men are ready to crown the champion in a game that promises to be epic.

The Yanks struggled quite a bit to get to the title match, since they were unable to score against Honduras until the 89th minute, courtesy of a header by Jordan Siebatcheu. If the Stars and Stripes want to end Mexico's two-game winning streak against them, then Gregg Berhalter's men will have to step their game up this Sunday and add one more trophy to their cabinet.

If the USMNT struggled to get to the final, Mexico had it even worse. El Tri was unable to break Costa Rica's defense and ended up sealing their ticket to the title clash in a penalty shootout. There, Mexico started with a miss by Uriel Antuna, but their players' skills prevailed over Los Ticos thanks to a key save by Guillermo Ochoa to give them the win. Mexico have only scored three times in four games during this year, and that is without a doubt the main cause for Martino's concern ahead of this match.

The USMNT will get to this game with four wins in their past five games. The only loss during that run came in a friendly match against Switzerland last week. Out of those, their 7-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago is by far the best result for Berhalter's men.

Regarding Mexico, Gerardo Martino's crew will enter this match with three games without a loss in 2021. Their first match of the year concluded with a 1-0 loss to Wales back in March, but since then, El Tri has beaten Costa Rica twice and Iceland. All of Mexico's goals in 2021 during regulation have been scored by Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, the man to watch this Sunday.

While this will be the first CONCACAF Nations League match between Mexico and the United States, history shows us that this will be the 71st match between these countries. Out of those, Mexico have won 36, while the Yanks have taken the win home 19 times. The remaining 15 games have ended in a draw. As we said earlier, Mexico will enter this clash with a two-game winning streak over the USMNT.
