The Belgian all but confirmed Atletico Madrid's elimination in the dramatic turn of events.

Drama took center stage at the latter part of Wednesday night's clash between Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, causing the former to outrightly miss out on qualifying to the next round of this season's UEFA Champions League. Yannick Carrasco missed a controversial late spot-kick that ensured that spoils were shared between the pair who will now be competing for a Europa League spot.

The visitors took the lead inside the first nine minutes after Moussa Diaby was set up by Adam Hlozek. Atletico subsequently restored parity through Carrasco's low shot from the edge of the box in the 22nd minutes. However, it was the Bundesliga club who went into the break with the upper hand after Callum Hudson-Odoi beat Jan Oblak from close range in the 31st minute. Five minutes into the second half, Atletico again battled back from a deficit to tie the score with a brilliant strike through substitute midfielder Rodrigo De Paul before going to miss a last-gasp spot-kick.

Referee Clement Turpin had initially blown the full-time whistle before VAR penalised Piero Hincapie for handball in the box. However, Carrasco's effort was stopped by Lukas Hradecky before Saul's follow up header bounced off the crossbar as Atletico exited the group stage for the first time in five years. While two Leverkusen players encroached before the kick was made, the match referee overlooked the incident with many suggesting that the spot-kick should have been retaken.

The game's outcome sparked wild celebrations on the plane of the FC Porto team who were enroute to Portugal following their 4-0 away victory over Club Brugge as it mean that they do not need to win their final game against Atletico to book a place in the knockout stage.
