Despite only taking over as manager this season, the Italian tactician has decided to resign rather than completing the rest of the campaign.

Sometimes doing something for the second time brings better returns, but that's not always the case.

And Serie A side Fiorentina found that the hard way this season. In a desperate bid to turn things around, the Viola turned to former manager Cesare Prandelli as the team plummeted towards the drop zone. And Prandelli did seemingly improve things in Fiorentina's camp. The highlight of their season was their stunning 3-0 win over Juventus heading into the Christmas break.

But there have been unfortunately more lows than highs. Yes, they beat Juventus 3-0, but they were humiliated 6-0 by Napoli. And since the start of 2021, Fiorentina have won just four games, and have never been able to break into the top half of the table.

So, it's not entirely shocking that today, it was revealed that the 63-year-old Prandelli has decided to tender his resignation to Fiorentina's executive board.

Although the reason was given as "non-football related", one can only speculate that it certainly will be quite disappointing for the experienced manager that he wasn't able to do more for Fiorentina, especially considering how successful he was during his first spell at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Ironically perhaps, Prandelli's replacement will be none other than Giuseppe Iachini, the man who was sacked on November 9th to make way for Prandelli. Will Iachini be able to produce better results this time around?

Time will tell.
