The Citizens boast a 2-0 advantage and will look to secure their spot in the quarter-finals. Here’s a preview of this 2nd leg European showdown.

Man City vs Borussia M'gladbach – preview

Only 90 minutes separate Man City from a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and those 90 minutes are right around the corner, with the Premier League giants gearing up for their second leg showdown against Borussia M'gladbach. Having won the first leg 2-0, the Citizens appear destined to proceed to the next round but given that this fixture will not be played at the Etihad Stadium, anything could happen.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first leg, which was the away tie for Guardiola's side, had to be moved to the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Similarly, the return fixture cannot be played at the Etihad Stadium and thus it will be held in the very same neutral venue. Regardless, the away goals rule still stands and De Bruyne and Co. picked up two of those without a reply, hence why they're in the driving seat.

Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus got on the scoresheet in that crucial triumph and as a result, talks of pulling off the treble are brewing. Since then, Man City have lost their record-breaking winning streak, going 2-0 down at home to Man United a while back but they remain in pole position to lift the Premier League crown, boasting a 14-point advantage over the second-placed Red Devils.

Additionally, the Citizens have booked their spot in the Carabao Cup final, where they will face Tottenham, and are through to the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Everton. However, everyone knows Man City's ultimate desire is to win a European title and after going out against the likes of Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Lyon in Pep's first four seasons in charge, the Spaniard looks to go the whole nine yards this time around.

As for the German outfits, things have not been going well for them as of recently. The Bundesliga outfit are now eight games without a win, with their 3-1 loss to Augsburg on Friday being their sixth defeat in a row. As a result, while a comeback is possible, not many expect Die Fohlen to pull one out of the hat.

A lot can be traced to Marco Rose's decision to join Dortmund next season, which was announced in mid-February. In fact, the last time his side won a game was a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal, with the German tactician sealing a Signal Iduna Park switch two games after. All signs point to the Bundesliga side crashing out, but they should do everything in their power to go out with a bang.

Team news

Man City: After an injury-plagued start to the season, Pep finally has a fully-fit squad at his disposal. All-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero returned to goalscoring form after his lengthy spell on the sidelines, netting in the 3-0 victory over Fulham and will be keen on getting on the scoresheet once more. The likes of Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sterling, and Mahrez were all rested during the weekend but should return to the fold.

Borussia M'gladbach: Ramy Bensebaini and Christoph Kramer are expected to miss out on this fixture. In their absence, Oscar Wendt and Denis Zakaria could deputize.
