Arsenal have serious defensive problems. Ajax centre-back Vertonghen has serious desires for English Premier League football. Can Arsenal and Vertonghen compose a match made in heaven?
“I have something with England, especially with the nostalgic atmosphere around the football.”

This is what Jan Vertonghen told The Sun on Monday. The defender was talking in the aftermath of Ajax Dutch Cup final fiasco as his side threw away a 2-0 first-half lead to lose 3-2 in extra-time. But Vertonghen feels he’s had enough of football in the Netherlands after making almost 200 appearances since 2006.

“Now this is the first year I would consider a possible transfer,” the centre-back continued in his interview with The Sun.

“It is utopian to think that players can be kept in Holland until they are 27. It is all fantastic stories from the guys who play in a foreign league.

“I hear them from Luis Suarez [who left Ajax for Liverpool], but also from six or seven players from the Belgian national team.”

Jan Vertonghen used to be a teammate of Thomas Vermaelen and he could well emulate his Belgium compatriot by travelling from Ajax to Arsenal. However, despite admitting that the Gunners’ defence is “sometimes a bit naive” following last weekend’s beating to Stoke City, Arsene Wenger remains reluctant to reinforce his Arsenal squad.

“We have mixed messages from people because we are always told to buy,” Wenger told press.

“But then, I am told that I don’t play my players enough. If I buy a few I will have more frustrated players…”

Should Arsene Wenger come back on his decision and consider making a transfer for Jan Vertonghen from Ajax to Arsenal?
