Torres makes history as Spain condemn Germany to biggest-ever competitive defeat

November 17, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Manchester City forward was the star of the show in what was nightmarish encounter for Die Mannschaft.

Spain have progressed to the penultimate round of the UEFA Nations League after an extraordinary performance fired them to a massive win over Germany on Tuesday. Inspired by Ferran Torres' hat-trick, La Roja Furia defeated Die Mannschaft by six goals to nil to end the preliminary campaign as winners of Group 4 of League A.

The result, which happens to be the German's biggest-ever defeat in the history of competitive football, was ushered in when Alvaro Morata broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a header. Shortly after, Ferran Torres doubled Spain's advantage by smashing in a volley from close range before Rodri put the game without out of the visitor's reach with another headed goal ahead of half time.

In what was a record-breaking night for Manuel Neuer who dethroned Sepp Maier to become Die Mannschafts' most-capped goalkeeper of all-time, a comeback to save the day would have fitted the narrative. However, that did not manifest as the hosts will go on to continue their onslaught.

Ferran Torres grabbed his second of the night with an assist from Fabian Ruiz in the 55th-minute before he finished off with his third in the 71st minute. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal put the last nail in the coffin by scoring Spain's sixt h goal of the night in the 89th minute.

In essence, 20-year-old Ferran Torres became the youngest player ever to score a hat-trick for the Spanish senior team in a competitive match. The former Valencia starlet also became the first player to score a hat-trick against Germany in a competitive game since Michael Owen in 2001. Only three players have managed the feat against Die Mannschaft with Portugal's Sérgio Conceição being the other player.
