Son and Kane set new Premier League records as Tottenham hits five against Southampton

September 20, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The pair combined to score all of Spurs’ goals in Sunday’s massive win.

Tottenham Hotspur pair Heung-min Son and Harry Kane have landed an all-new Premier League record following their remarkable performance in the clash with Southampton. The two players combined to score all the five goals for Spurs as they run riot in Sunday's encounter.

Prior the onslaught, Danny Ings have the Saint the lead by scoring his first goal of the season inside the 32nd minute. However, the England international had his season opener canceled by Heung-min Son in added time of the first half with an assist from Harry Kane.

Just a minute after proceedings resumed in the second half, the South Korean was assisted again by the England skipper to put Tottenham a goal ahead. The two worked together once more in the 64th minute to take the score to 3:1 before combining to get Son his fourth of the game in the 74th minute.

Having created all of Spur's first four goals, Kane got on the scoresheet by tapping home a rebound of Lamela's shot which had come off the post after being parried away by McCarthy. The game concluded with Danny Ings scoring his second from the penalty spot.

Tottenham's domineering performance led to the revision of a few records in the Premier League. Below are a number of them as curated by Opta.

  •  Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane have combined to score more goals in the Premier League than any other duo in the competition since the former arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015 (22 goals).

  • Son is the first Tottenham player and the fourth in the Premier League to score a hat-trick assisted by the same player. Newell to Shearer (v Coventry, Sep 1995), Collymore to Fowler (v Arsenal, Dec 1995), Henry to Ljungberg (v Sunderland, May 2003) are the only three players to manage the feat.

  • Harry Kane is the first English player to assist four goals in a single Premier League game.

  • Harry Kane is the first player to be directly involved in 5 goals in a Premier League game (1 goal, 4 assists) since Mohamed Salah did so in Liverpool v Watford in March 2018 (4 goals, 1 assist).

  • Having assisted all four of Son's goals against Southampton, Kane became the first player in Premier League history to do so for the second time.
