After three decades of missing out on winning the continental title, optimism is high in the camp of the Black Stars that this year might actually be the year to end the drought.

The Black Stars of Ghana have released a preminary 29-man squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Who are the star players of Ghana?

Thomas Teye Partey

Over the past three years, Atletico Madrid's Thomas Teye Partey has grown to be a real fan favorite in the Black Stars set-up and could potentially be his side's key man in Egypt this summer. The 25-year-old box-to-box midfielder enjoyed yet another stellar season with Los Rojiblancos this season with his three goals and six assists helping Diego Simeone's side to a second place finish in La Liga.

His steady rise to prominence was recognized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as he was honored with a place in the Africa's Best XI at the 2018 CAF Awards. As Ghana's highest scorer in the last two-and-a-half years with seven goals in 17 caps, Partey's value for the four-time African champions cannot be overemphasized.

Christian Atsu

Newcastle United star Christian Atsu is also one of the notable key figures in the Ghanaian camp who has the potential to light up the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. Despite a tough start with the Magpies in the English Premier League, the 27-year-old winger rejuvenated his career and proved to be an integral member of the side midway into the season.

His meagre goal and assist return hardly tells the whole story as he made up for the decificiency with his ability to create chances and spark brilliant attacking moves. Adjudged the Player of The Tournament at the 2015 AFCON held in Equatorial Guinea, it will be costly to undermine what Atsu has to offer.

Who is the coach of Ghana?

Kwesi Appiah is the current head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana.

What are Ghana's fixtures at the 2019 AFCON?

Ghana will commence its 2019 AFCON against Benin. A replay of the 2008 semi-final will then follow with the Black Stars taking on defending champions Cameroon. They will take on Guinea-Bissau in the final group game.

What are the odds of Ghana winning the 2019 AFCON?

As semifinalists at the last six editions of the tournament, Ghana enters the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as a strong favorite. Having missed out on taking their championship trophy counts to six with defeats in the 2010 and 2015 finals, the Black Stars will be out to right the wrongs of the past.

They certainly have the personnel to pull it of with the likes of veterans such as Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Christian Atsu all available to help the team with their immense experience. Although the synergy in camp has been questioned as a result of recent controversies surrounding captaincy in the side, many expect the script to remain unadulterated.

That withstanding, the group stage could present a few tests for the four-time champions as the likes of Benin, Guinea-Bissau and defending champions Cameroon will not be mere push-overs. Should the Black Stars successfully progress to the second round, the fight for its first title in over three decades will be well and truly underway.
