One can't talk about women's footballing powerhouses without mentioning Germany. Will the ladies help to redeem the country after the embarrassing showing from their male counterparts in Russia last summer?

What is Germany's history in the FIFA Women's World Cup?

Ranked only second behind the United States, as per FIFA's latest rankings, Germany will be making their eighth straight appearance at the World Cup this summer. Die Nationalelf are just a handful of sides who have been serial participants at the FIFA Women's World Cup and are only behind the Stars and Stripes in terms of titles won (they have two versus the USA's three).

To date, Germany are the only side to have won back-to-back titles, when they won it in 2003 and 2007, but Japan prevented them from winning it on home soil in 2011. In fact, when they served at hosts, it was an overall disappointing tournament for the side, who didn't even get to the semi-finals as they bowed out at the quarter-finals juncture.

2015 saw Germany finish in fourth place, but naturally, they will be looking to do better in France this summer. Should they manage to win the title, they will be tied with the United States for most trophies won. After the embarrassment the men's side suffered in Russia last summer, it could help to restore some pride in Germany as well.

Who are the key players to watch for Germany at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup?

They are one of the best teams in women's football, and naturally, there are plenty of star names on in Germany's ranks. Two in particular to watch out for this summer will be Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsán.

Popp, with 45 goals so far, is currently the team's top goal-scorer, but despite winning the under-20 Women's World Cup, has yet to enjoy success with the senior side. A two-time Footballer of the Year in Germany (2014 and 2016), she has also won three Women's Champions League titles (2009, 2013, and 2014) as well as several Bundesliga titles and as a youth, was the only female student at the famed Gesamtschule Berger Feld in Gelsenkirchen.

Meanwhile, teammate Marozsán, who was born in Hungary but moved to Germany and became a naturalized citizen as a small child when her father, Janos, got a contract with 1. FC Saarbrücken, is also a two-time recipient of the Female Footballer of the Year prize in Germany (2017 and 2018) and played a vital role in Germany winning the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Like Popp, she has tasted success with the youth sides at World Cups and will certainly be looking to help spearhead her team's goals in trying to end their wait for a third title in France this summer.

Who is Germany's coach?

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is the current manager of Germany's women's side. The former midfielder, who also occasionally played as a striker and is well-known as one of the pioneers of German women's football once managed the Swiss women's team and helped them not only qualify for their first ever World Cup, but also their first ever EURO tournament. Expectations will be high as she attempts to match the impressive achievements of long-serving predecessor (and former teammate) Silvia Neid. Neid's immediate successor, Steffi Jones, only lasted two years in the post - despite a solid winning percentage record of 74% - because she was "only" able to get Germany to the quarter-finals of the EURO championship.

No pressure, then?
