During the previous meeting between these teams, wingman Javier Aquino was involved in an incident that caused Honduras' midfielder Luis Garrido a horrific injury. Prior to the celebration of this game, and knowing that Garrido has already recovered, Aquino sent the player a message via Twitter.

After Friday's win against Canada, Honduras' manager Jorge Luis Pinto criticized the region's referees, and even requested that ref Mark Geiger didn't officiate the game, since he's had questionable performances in games where Mexico was involved. Days later, FIFA denied their request, but a complaint was filed to remove the ref.
