The Italian reporter made a claim which may anger Red Devils fans, as Bayern acquired the 18-year-old’s signature.

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich dropped two huge transfer news in succession, confirming the signing of both Mats Hummels and Renato Sanches, with the latter being an unexpected bombshell.

The reason for this is that the 18-year-old midfield sensation, who currently plies his trade at Benfica, was heavily linked with a move to Man United next season, as the club looks to rebuild the squad with the aim of challenging for silverware.

However, it was the Bundesliga champions who swiftly wrapped up the deal for Sanches, signing the Portuguese starlet on a five-year deal worth €35m, leaving Man United fans in shock and dismay as to why the Red Devils failed to land their summer target.

Shortly afterwards, fans of the 20-time English Premier League champions were treated to a report as to why Sanches ended at the Allianz Arena instead of Old Trafford.

According Gianluca Di Marzio, the FA Cup finalists – due to play West Ham on Tuesday in the Premier League – were in fact close to signing the Bayern ace, but the Italian Sky Sports journalist claims that Van Gaal’s side backed off from the deal.

This claim, if true, could spark outrage from the Man United faithful, especially given that the English giants were scouting Sanches for the best part of five months.
