It's been almost six years since the last time Stuttgart defeated Bayer Leverkusen in any competition. Will they be able to take advantage of their injury-depleted squad?

Ever since Jurgen Kramny took over Stuttgart's head coaching job, Die Schwaben have shown a lot of improvement and establishing a considerable distance between them and their opponents to avoid relegation. With that in mind, the hosts will try to defeat Bayer Leverkusen, a team that started off with a bang, but has slowed down in the past few weeks.

These teams met back in October at BayArena. Stuttgart couldn't hold on to their two-goal lead and ended up losing 4-3 with a late goal by Admir Mehmedi.

Stuttgart's season has turned out to be quite decent, despite a slow start that forced Kramny's appointnment as coach. Out of their last six games, the white and red side have experienced all possible results in football (2W, 2D, 2L). Die Schwaben will be forced to take on Bayer Leverkusen without five players, including right back Kevin Grosskreutz and Daniel Ginczek, who will sit this one out due to injury.

On the other hand, things haven't been working out lately for Bayer Leverkusen, as Roger Schmidt's crew has been eliminated from the Europa League the DFB Pokal and their form in the domestic tournament has been affected by a series of injuries to key players. Center back Kyriakos Papadopoulos has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Omer Toprak could sit this one out due to an injury. Tim Jedvaj will also watch this game from the stands, having to serve a one match ban.

Head to head

Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen have played 72 games against each other, with the red-and-black side winning 31 of those outings. In fact, Bayer Leverkusen has won seven out of the last ten matches against Stuttgart in all competitions, including three wins at Mercedes Benz Arena.
