With seven weeks to go before the season ends, Chicago Fire and Toronto FC will clash on Saturday night at Toyota Park in the hope of getting points to keep their playoff aspirations alive.

The teams will meet for the third and last time this season with both of them currently out of playoff positions in the Eastern Conference. Toronto FC is in seventh place in the table with 33 points while Chicago stands in ninth place with 29 points. The ‘red line’ currently stands at 36 points so this match will be an opportunity for the Eastern clubs to get closer to the playoff spots. The last two times they met this season the result was a draw.

Both clubs arrive to this match having lost their last games; Chicago Fire lost 2-1 against New England Revolution last Saturday while Toronto FC increased their winless streak to five after losing 2-0 against Philadelphia Union in the same day.

This week, the Chicago Fire added former Liverpool player Florent Sinama-Pongolle to their roster following the news that reigning MLS MVP Mike Magee is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing a hip surgery.

Fire’s head coach, Frank Yallop had his word regarding Sinama-Pongolle signing and Magee’s injury.

“It’s unfortunate that Mike will be out for an extended period, but he’s been struggling this season with the injuries,” the manager said. “After consulting with our medical staff, we decided that this was the best time for Mike to have the procedure.”

“Florent is a quality player with experience playing in some of the top leagues in Europe. Since he’s been training with us for the past few weeks, we’ve been able to see first-hand the attributes he has. I’m pleased that we were able to add him to the squad as we enter the final stretch of the regular season.”

New Toronto FC’s head coach Greg Vanney reckons that they haven’t played well in the last few matches and that they have to improve if they want to reach the playoffs.

“Right now, we’re not doing the little things well; sometimes we’re trying more complicated things but we don’t need to do that right now. We need to go back to basics and build some confidence and unity from that.”

Toronto FC midfielder Michael Bradley agrees with Vanney and hopes that the team can make a bigger effort in order to get back to winning ways.

"We are all frustrated,” the USMNT star said. “We all tried to take a good hard look at ourselves in the mirror and now talk about things in a collective way but still challenge each guy to look at himself and find a way to take what he does and do a little bit more a little bit better. If every guy is able to do that it can start to add up in a really positive way.”
