The 2013-14 English Premier League champions Manchester City begin their title defense when they travel to St James' Park to lock horns with Alan Pardew's Newcastle United.
The Citizens will look to brush off their disappointing 3-0 loss to London side Arsenal in the FA Community Shield last Sunday as they aim to thrash the Magpies in their season opener for the second consecutive time, repeating last season's 4-0 win at the Etihad.
Manuel Pellegrini will have problems up forward as the Chilean tactician will be without Argentine ace Sergio Aguero who is a doubt for this, whilst Alvaro Negredo remains out of the squad after picking up a lengthy sideline, breaking his foot in a friendly against Hearts. The club are hopeful the 28-year-old Spaniard will be out for only two months, though.
The Manchester side will also have to do without newly-signed French center-back Eliaquim Mangala, but will be boosted with the return of club captain Vincent Kompany, and Fernandinho. Former Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna could also make his first appearance for Manchester City after he left the Emirates on a free transfer.
Newcastle will be without their top-scorer from last term Loic Remy as the French forward's loan at the Magpies came to an end, returning to London side Queens Park Rangers. However, Pardew has added quality to their attack, bringing former Ligue 1 stars Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Rivière to Tyneside.
Key absentees for Newcastle will be their Ivorian midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote who is out with a hmastring injury. Siem de Jong, the 25-year-old star signed from Ajax, is also ruled out with a foot injury, whilst Papiss Cisse and Davide Santon are also unlikely to feature.
