Last season’s runners-up commence their 2014/15 English Premier League challenge against the team they “ripped” in this transfer window. Watch Liverpool vs Southampton live online or on TV on August 17, 2014.

Anfield will be on fire with the home crowd hoping to improve on what they achieved in 2013/14. If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Merseyside Reds would have been EPL champions. However, they did more than enough to reach their objective of qualifying for UEFA Champions League football.

In a bid to strengthen the squad following the departure of superstar striker Luis Suarez, coach Brendan Rodgers has made a number of signings already this summer, three of which were made from Southampton. Confidence and optimism reign at Anfield.

“We've got great hope going into this season. What happened last year counts for nothing, that's all gone now. The one thing that will carry on from that is the belief,” Rodgers told the press

He added:

“Our aim is to be competitive. Like the top teams, we want to win a trophy. That would be an aim. In the league, it's about sustaining Champions League football.

“For that you want to arrive in fourth. Once you have consolidated that, you can look beyond that. That's certainly our aim this season.”

Sunday’s 2014/15 English Premier League opener for Liverpool will be particularly important for ex-Southampton key players Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert. Both are set to start whereas Adam Lallana, also a former Saint, alongside Lazar Markovic have been ruled out due to injury.

The match will be officiated by referee Mark Clattenburg. Shane Long, who officially joined Southampton from Hull City on Thursday, is expected to be part of Ronald Koeman’s First XI. The visitors will fancy their chances of creating an upset. Indeed, the last three home meetings in the Premier League between both sides at Anfield finished 1-0, with Southampton winning the last one.
