The Greeks will face Ivory Coast while the Super Eagles will come up against Bosnia-Herzegovina at the World Cup so the Greece vs Nigeria friendly match appears as a perfect rehearsal for both sides.

Greece edged past Romania 4-2 in the UEFA World Cup qualifying playoffs to qualify for Brazil 2014. However, they face the challenge of going past the group stage for the first time ever in what will be their third tournament appearance.

Their goalless draw against Portugal on Saturday has left Fernando Santos with much to do. His side barely managed to create goal scoring chances in the first half of that game as Kostas Mitroglou chased long balls in vain upfront. The Greeks looked more adventurous during the final 10 minutes but were unable to break the deadlock, all the same.

Against the Nigerians, the Euro 2004 champions will have to do without Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The defender suffered a biceps injury against the Portuguese and will be on the sidelines for a few days. However, he should be fit to face the United States on Friday.

Nigeria were far from impressive against Scotland, conceding twice and drawing 2-2 in the end. But this encounter was only a test for Stephen Keshi to form his final 23-man squad. The Super Eagles will need to overcome the distractions linking the team to fresh match fixing allegations.

The return of Peter Odemwingie in the national team, ending his personal issues with coach Stephen Keshi, has brought smiles on Nigerian fans’ face. As the experienced Stoke City striker told The Guardian:

“Many people wanted to see me back in the national team, some wrote to me to say that they missed me in the green colours, because I’ve done pretty well for Nigeria.

“[...] In the past few years my only regret is that, as I’ve become a better player, I probably would have got more goals for myself and the country but I missed out a bit.

“I’ve missed a year and a half, missed out on the cup they won, unfortunately. I wish I was part of that [2013 AFCON] squad because I’ve played in four Africa Nations and got three bronze medals, never a gold. But I can’t look back. This is another opportunity for me.”
