On May 13, 2014, an explosion in a mine in Soma, Turkey, caused a fire that lasted for two days and that killed 301 people. The tragedy became the worst mine disaster in Turkish history.

To remember the tragic incident and show support to the family of the victims, the Galatasaray players wore helmets before their league game against Kayseri Erciyesspor.

Moreover, Didier Drogba made a very generous donation of €1M to the families of the casualties of the mining disaster.

The African legend is nominated Goodwill Ambassador

The Cote d’Ivoire international, who became a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador on 24 January 2007, is fitting the role of UN ambassador with great personality. The former Chelsea player stated:

“I am a U.N. ambassador of goodwill and I will do all that I can to help the people in Soma."

Drogba also started his own foundation to challenge most African issues

 

The African striker then added:

"But I don’t want anyone to use my name. I’m not someone who will promote himself in such issues. I don’t need this sort of a self-promotion."
