About CONCACAF Gold Cup

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Concacaf Gold Cup is a major biennial continental tournament featuring the national teams from the Concacaf region. As the name suggests, it is organized by the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football, one of FIFA’s six continental governing bodies. Founded in 1991, the competition succeeded the Concacaf Championship, also known as the Concacaf Nations Championship, which was the region’s premier event from 1963 to 1989.

The format of the tournament has evolved over the years, particularly regarding the number of participating teams. Since 2000, the Gold Cup has included twelve or more teams, divided into three or four groups of four. Following the group stage, eight teams advance directly to the quarterfinals, where knockout matches determine the winners.

This process continues until the final match, where the two best teams compete for the title. If there is no clear winner after normal time, extra time and, if necessary, penalty shootouts are used. Unlike other national team competitions, the Gold Cup does not feature a third-place match, allowing players to return to their respective clubs sooner.

In addition to the usual pool of Concacaf teams, the association has invited countries from other confederations to enhance the competition's appeal. Teams such as Qatar, Brazil, Colombia, and South Korea have participated in various editions of the Gold Cup, although none have managed to win the title.

The inaugural Gold Cup was won by the United States, which has historically dominated the event alongside North American rivals Mexico. Mexico became the first national team to win three consecutive Gold Cup titles, achieving this feat in 1993, 1996, and 1998.

The 2025 Gold Cup is set to kick off on June 14, with defending champions Mexico facing the Dominican Republic in the opening game. The USA and Canada are hosting the tournament, with the USMNT starting their campaign on the second day against Trinidad and Tobago, while Canada open their tournament on the fourth day against Honduras.

This edition features 16 teams divided into four groups of four, with Saudi Arabia invited to compete. The competition takes place over three weeks, commencing on June 14 and concluding with the final on July 6, 2025. The final is scheduled to be held at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, with additional venues including SoFi Stadium, Levi’s Stadium, PayPal Park, Snapdragon Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and Energizer Park.

The 2025 Gold Cup follows a similar format to previous editions, where teams face each other once within their groups in a single round-robin. Goal difference and goals scored serve as the primary tie-breakers if teams finish with equal points. Only the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, which will consist of one-legged quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final.

While teams like Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, and Honduras have qualified for this tournament, all eyes will be on Mexico, the USA, and Canada. These Concacaf powerhouses are also the hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and thus approach the 2025 Gold Cup with one eye on that major event.

The tournament features several prominent managers, including USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino (formerly with Chelsea, PSG, and Tottenham), Canada’s Jesse Marsch (previously at Leeds and RB Salzburg), and Mexico’s Javier Aguirre (formerly with Mallorca and Monterrey).

The 2025 Gold Cup coincides with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA. As a result, some key North American players are anticipated to miss the tournament in favor of the Club World Cup, including American players Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah, who play for Dortmund and Juventus. Nonetheless, fans can expect to see standout players such as Matt Turner, Sergiño Dest, Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Brian White, Edson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez, Santiago Giménez, Hirving Lozano, and Jonathan David.

FOX Sports holds exclusive English-language broadcast rights for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup in the USA. Thanks to this agreement, fans can watch the matches live on FS1, while FS2 and FOX will occasionally broadcast select games. Spanish-language broadcast rights are held by TelevisaUnivision, allowing viewers to watch the 2025 Gold Cup in Spanish on TUDN in the USA. TUDN is also the official broadcaster in Mexico, while fans in Canada can follow the action on OneSoccer.
