TSN1 history, coverage, features

TSN1 is the primary regional feed of The Sports Network, more commonly known as TSN, serving British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. This regional feed was established in August 2014, increasing the network’s channel lineup from two (TSN and TSN2) to five.

The Sports Network originally launched with a single channel in September 1984 and expanded to two in 2008 with the addition of TSN2. In 2014, TSN expanded further by introducing TSN1, along with three other regional feeds—TSN3, TSN4, and TSN5—to enhance its capacity for airing more live sports programming from its extensive portfolio.

While TSN1 is available nationwide and simulcasts major sports broadcasts alongside its sister feeds, it also provides programming targeted to its viewers in British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. TSN1 has also regularly featured shows from the major American sports network ESPN, which may also be aired on TSN3 and TSN5.

Major sporting events showcased on TSN1 include the NFL’s Monday Night Football, the Canadian Football League, and its championship game, the Grey Cup. It’s important to note that TSN1’s region-specific content may be subject to blackout in areas outside its targeted market. Additionally, due to broadcast rights deals, which are subject to change, these competitions may no longer be available on the network.

Upon its launch, TSN1 was made available through major Canadian cable and satellite providers, including Bell TV, Rogers, Shaw, and Telus. However, the feed was introduced to Videotron’s lineup two months later, which sparked some controversy. In September 2024, TSN was also added to the major streaming service Amazon Prime Video. Viewers can further stream TSN1 through the TSN app and the network’s official website.
