About FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup
FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is an international tournament for women’s national teams for players under the age of 17. It was created by FIFA following the overwhelming success of the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship in 2002, which led to the creation and eventual first edition of this competition in 2008. The first eight editions of the tournament were played by 16 national teams every two years, but a re-engineering by FIFA has seen the number of entries being raised to 24, while the tournament is set to be played annually.
Football’s governing body determines the number of spots for each confederation before the qualifiers start. For all subsequent U-17 Women’s World Cup editions, FIFA has handed out the berths to play in the competition as follows:
AFC: 4 slots
CAF: 5 slots (including the hosts)
Concacaf: 4 slots
CONMEBOL: 4 slots
OFC: 2 Slots
UEFA: 5 slots
The tournament’s format sees all 24 teams drawn into six groups of four. Each group watches all teams playing three matches during the first round, where the two top teams make it to the next round. Four more spots to play the KO stage are also available to the best third-place teams. Those 16 teams make it to the final bracket.
All ties are one-off matches, with penalties determining the winner if a game ends in a draw after 90 minutes. FIFA also includes a third-place match before the final is held. Teams from different confederations have won the title, but North Korea and Spain have been the most successful, both being able to win the U-17 Women’s World Cup multiple times.
