About 1. Lig
The TFF First League (TFF 1. Lig) is the second level of the Turkish football league system. It was established in 2001 and is organized by the Turkish Football Federation.
The TFF 1. Lig operates on the relegation and promotion system, and a total of 18 teams feature in the competition. Each team plays each other twice in a season. The total number of matches amount to 34 (17 at home and 17 away). If a game is won, the winner is awarded three points. A draw merits one point, and no point is given for a loss.
At the end of a season, the team with the highest points is crowned the league winner. The champions, alongside the competition's first runner-up, are promoted to the Super Lig. The final promotion slot is contested in a playoff by the teams that finished between third and sixth.
Relatively, the three lowest-ranked clubs are relegated to the Turkish Second League Category B. Three top teams from the latter division are promoted to replace the demoted teams.
TFF 1. Lig clubs are eligible to play in the Turkish Cup. A team from the division can also feature in the UEFA Europa League by winning the domestic cup competition.
