It was founded and launched its radio service on May 10, 1964, while its first television channel saw the light on October 31, 1968. It is owned by the Turkish government. TRT had a monopoly of all radio and television in Turkey until 1990, when the first commercial radio stations were launched. The tv monopoly for TRT ended in 1992 with the introduction of the first commercial networks.
Over the years, TRT Turkey has created a large variety of thematic channels, which have been categorized as general entertainment, sports, one that includes children’s programming, a channel that has aired documentaries, educational channels, music channels, and even channels aimed to serve a specific demographic, such as Arabian or Kurdish citizens. The network has also created and developed thematic radio stations to suit their citizens’ needs.
Speaking about its television services, TRT Turkey started broadcasting its content in analog television, but it would later evolve to Standard Definition TV.
