SABC 3 history, coverage, features
SABC 3 is a free-to-air television channel from South Africa, which is owned and operated by the South African Broadcasting Corporation. This channel was launched in 1992 under the name NNTV, but it would later be rebranded to SABC 3 in 1996. The channel airs most of its content in English, although some shows in Afrikaans language have also been added over the years.
SABC 3 became the home for most of the shows aired by TV1, one of South Africa’s channels during the apartheid era. Added to those shows, the channel has also aired several international programs, mainly due to its deals with television networks in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
SABC 3 has also covered shows with a variety of topics, which have included drama series, soap operas, educational shows, music shows, current affairs’ programs, movies, news shows, and sports. Although most of the programming on this channel comes from international sources, some of the shows aired on SABC 3 are in-house productions.
Speaking about sports, SABC 3 has covered disciplines such as football, cricket, mixed martial arts, and more. Football leagues and competitions aired on this network over the years have included the German Bundesliga, the English Premier League, and African Cup of Nations matches.
SABC 3 started broadcasting its content in Standard Definition, but a High Definition feed was made available to its users in 2018.
