About CAF Champions League
CAF Champions League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
CAF Champions League, or Total CAF Champions League for sponsorship reasons, is the most prestigious club competition in that continent. The format of this tournament has changed over time, with the current number of entries being 61 teams. That number goes down to sixteen after two preliminary rounds that give way for the proper competition.
CAF uses a 5-year ranking system to allocate spots to all its confederations. As of now, only two teams from each country can qualify for the tournament. Supposedly, the number of entries could reach 68 at some point, but that has never happened.
The most recent edition saw 61 teams entering the competition, with three of them being handed a bye for the preliminary round. The number of clubs is narrowed down to 16, and finally, all teams are drawn into four groups of four teams, beginning the proper tournament.
All preliminary rounds and KO ties are played in a two-leg format. The final will be played at a neutral venue for the first time. The winner of this competition gets to represent Africa in the FIFA Club World Cup months after winning it, and if that was not enough, a handsome cash prize is awarded to the winner.
The 2018-19 CAF Champions League campaign ended in controversial form, as Esperance de Tunis claimed a second title in a row after Wydad Casablanca abandoned the game due to an incident with VAR technology. Wydad’s players left the pitch and CAF authorities granted the win to Esperance, which was later appealed by the Moroccan side at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Eventually, CAS would ask CAF execs to make a decision, and the African entity decided to give Esperance the title.
