About
SCTV history, coverage, features
SCTV, short for Surya Citra Televisi, is an Indonesian television channel owned and operated by Surya Citra Media. The channel was launched on July 20, 1990 as a trial broadcast, giving way for its official launch on August 24, 1990. SCTV started out as a local channel, but it was granted a national broadcasting license in 1993, which did wonders for the channel’s growth.
Over the years, SCTV has been categorized as a general entertainment channel, with soap operas, sports broadcasts, news, and magazine shows. The network has been known for airing local content, but sports programming has quickly become one of the most relevant in Indonesian television, with many broadcasting rights being acquired by the network as time has gone by.
SCTV has covered a wide variety of disciplines over the years, including football, basketball, combat sports, golf, auto racing, and more. Curiously, most of the competitions that have been aired on this channel are international tournaments, as local competitions have been aired by other channels.
When it comes to football, SCTV has covered club tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the UEFA Europa League, and domestic competitions such as the English Premier League. National team football has also been available on SCTV, with the FIFA World Cup being covered by the channel over the years.
SCTV was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed saw the light in the second half of the 2010s to add depth to the user’s experience. The HD feed became the primary option to watch this channel, although a downscaled version of the channel has been made available for those users who do not have access to HD technology.
