About
SABC 1 history, coverage, features
SABC 1 is a community public service television channel from South Africa, which is owned and operated by the South African Broadcasting Corporation. It substituted the defunct CCV channel in 1996 and has established itself as one of the most diverse and watched channels in the country, with shows both in English and Nguni languages.
SABC 1 has covered a wide variety of topics over time. Some of the topics discussed on the channel’s shows have included soap operas, drama series, music programs, magazine shows, religion shows, current affairs’ programs, children’s programming, movies, news broadcasts, and sports. While most of their show have been in-house productions, foreign shows have also been made available on this channel over the years.
Speaking about sports, SABC1 has focused on broadcasting live football games. Some of the competitions covered on this channel have included the FIFA World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, and international friendlies featuring the South African National Team. Domestic football has also been covered on this channel, as the South African Premier Soccer League has found a recurrent home on this channel.
SABC 1 was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High Definition feed was launched in the early 2010s. Users who have not switched to HDTV might enjoy a downscaled version of this feed to watch on Standard Definition TV sets.
