Chelsea will return to Premier League action after their participation in the Champions League as they welcome relegation favorites Norwich City to the Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the 4th of May.

Preview: Chelsea looking to make a response after European heartache

A season which promised so much could end without Chelsea adding any silverware to their trophy cabinet. The Blues surrendered their lead at the top of the table to Liverpool after a few results went against them and were recently knocked out of the Champions League by Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

This implies that Mourinho’s second coming will result in Chelsea ending the season without a trophy for the first time under the Portuguese’s reign.

The former Real Madrid coach who is widely known for his tactical astuteness was unable to get his plan right for the match against Atletico. Chelsea put forth a defensive display during the first leg at Vicente Calderon with the match ending a 0-0 stalemate.

Chelsea were expected to come out all guns blazing in the second leg but Mourinho once again opted for a defensive approach. However this time Diego Simeone and co came well prepared and even though Chelsea took the lead through Fernando Torres Atleti responded with three goals and booked their place in the final of the competition.

Mourinho has received much criticism for promoting a negative brand of football, however the Portuguese defended his approach and claimed that he did what he had to in order to produce results.

"I feel that in a conscious way I knew what I was doing at a certain moment of the season," he said.

"I made the decision to stop the evolution in the style of play and I went in a direction that with these players we have we could get results.

"I felt we couldn't arrive where we did in the Champions League if we didn't change our style of play. The team became more strategical and less intuitive because we went for results.

"There was a moment where I felt this Premier League was so dangerous that it was a big risk for every one of the big teams to be out of the top four. The reality is that this Premier League is a big risk and next season will be the same. Man United are out, I think Arsenal will do it but they were in trouble, Everton are a threat, Tottenham are a threat."

Even though it might be a bit ambitious for Chelsea to feel they can win the title Mourinho and Chelsea are unlikely to give up. The Blues trail both Liverpool and Manchester City by two points and will need their title rivals to drop points if they are to have any chance of winning the league for the first time since 2010.

Whereas Norwich have dipped into the relegation zone, Sunday’s encounter will not be a walk in the park for the Blues. However the Canaries’ recent form has not been Premier League worthy and should Norwich be demoted to England’s second tier league they will only have themselves to blame.
Norwich have lost all of their last five Premier League matches and to make matters worse, Sunderland who a few weeks back were at the foot of the league table have experienced a resurgence and improved performances have seen the Black Cats crawl out of the bottom three to be replaced by the Yellows.

Neil Adams arrival following the departure of Chris Hughton has not brought much luck to the club either with Norwich losing all the three matches they have played under their new manager. In their last outing Norwich were subjected to a 4-0 beating at the hands of Man United as Ryan Giggs made his managerial debut.

Whereas Norwich’s first team has not had much luck at Stamford Bridge having last won at Chelsea’s home in 1993, their FA Cup Youth team managed by Adams secured the FA Cup after a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge last May. And Adams will be hoping he can prove to be a good luck charm for the first team as well by securing three vital points for his team. The match against Chelsea will be followed by a home fixture against Arsenal and with a much inferior goal difference as compared to other relegation battlers, Norwich will have to secure maximum points from their remaining games if they are to have any chance of retaining their place in the Premier League.

Mourinho will have a fully fit squad to choose from with all three of John Terry, Eden Hazard and Eto’o making their return to the squad in the match against Atletico. Whereas Petr Cech has seemingly recovered from his shoulder injury earlier than expected and will be available for selection.

However Brazilian international Ramires will not be able to take part in domestic competitions this season after his red card against Sunderland earned him suspension ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Norwich’s only injury concern is Joseph Yobo who will be on the sidelines due to a calf injury. Neil Adams is expected to make a few changes after a poor run of form which has seen the Canaries score in just one of their last five matches.
