An intriguing clash is in store as two European heavyweights, Bayern Munich and Barcelona prepare to square off on matchday two of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League.

It is safe to say that Barcelona really do not have fond memories of playing Bayern Munich as of late. One of the most recent meetings between the Blaugrana and die Roten ended as a 8-2 humiliating defeat for the Spanish giants, while the Bavarian titans went on to win the Champions League in 2020. To date, the two sides have met 13 times, with Bayern winning on nine of those occasions, including six of their last seven.

To make matters worse, Barcelona were further humiliated during last season's edition of this competition, with Bayern winning both home and away 3-0. Interestingly, Robert Lewandowski, who now plays for the Blaugrana, netted a brace at Camp Nou, and should he score on Tuesday evening, he will become only the fourth player to score both for and against Bayern in Champions League history.

Well, this will be a new season, and certainly, Barcelona will be hoping to banish those terrible memories of being second best when it comes to playing Bayern. The new-look Blaugrana looked quite sharp as they cruised to a 5-1 win over Eastern European minnows Viktoria Plzen, with Lewandowski netting a hat-trick. This has made the 34-year-old Polish star the first player to score a hat-trick for three different clubs in this competition, and despite spending nearly a decade at the Allianz Arena, he certainly will not have any room for nostalgia upon returning for the first time since his departure this summer.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, kicked off proceedings with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Inter on matchday one. Given the difficulty of this group, all matches between Bayern, Barcelona, and Inter, will definitely prove to be the decisive factor in who progresses to the knockout rounds and who has to settle for a spot in the Europa League. However, Bayern's recent domestic form is a major source of concern. Die Roten come into this tie having drawn their last three matches against Borussia Monchengladbach, Union Berlin and most recently, Stuttgart, which is not exactly the way Julian Naglesmann would have wanted to see his team prepare for a game of this magnitude.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will be keen on making amends after last season's horror show that saw them dumped out of the group stages for the first time in over two decades. Xavi's side strolled to a comfortable 4-0 win over Cadiz last weekend which makes it four wins on the spin and sees them second behind Real Madrid in the table.

Has the fortunes of these two teams reversed in recent times? Will Barcelona finally end their hoodoo at the Allianz Arena, or will Bayern heap more misery on a familiar opponent?
