Chelsea vs Liverpool under risk of postponement

Sunday's Chelsea vs Liverpool showdown under risk of postponement and here's why

September 10, 2022 By Ali M.
Two interesting Premier League games are scheduled to take place in London this Sunday, which is the day before the funeral parade for Queen Elizabeth II.

This weekend would have seen Matchweek 7 in the Premier League take place, with several interesting matches such as Man City vs Tottenham and Fulham vs Chelsea initially expected to go down. However, the sad passing away of Queen Elizabeth II sent Britain into a state of mourning, resulting in the postponement of the English top-flight.

It should be pointed out that not everyone agreed with this move. With the government permitting the Premier League to make its own decision whether to cancel the weekend fixtures or to carry on, several well-known pundits and journalists criticized the organizers, arguing that the game should have gone on in order to pay tribute to Britain's longest serving monarch.

However, those who were disappointed by the postponement of Matchweek 7 could be in for further frustration as next weekend's fixtures could also get pushed back. This is according to the Sun, claiming that the highly-anticipated Chelsea vs Liverpool fixture is one of two Matchweek 8 games that could get rescheduled.

The reason is simple: with the Queen's funeral parade taking place on Monday, there are fears surrounding the games scheduled to take place that weekend in London, of which there are many. The Blues are expected to host Liverpool on Sunday while Arsenal visit Brentford, who are situated in West London, earlier that same day.

And that's not all as North London giants Tottenham will be in action on Saturday as Conte's men are scheduled to host Leicester. While no sporting events are set to take place on the day of Queen Elizabeth's funeral, "millions of people" could arrive in the English capital during the weekend as a result, which would take a huge toll on the Metropolitan police resources.

Sunday's London matches, in particular, are under question and could even be moved to another location due to logistics. Additionally, the two fixtures could be brought forward to Saturday, but this brings about another headache as the Gunners won't have sufficient rest time due to their Europa League showdown with PSV on Thursday.
