English Premier League: How to watch Man United vs Arsenal live on September 4, 2022

September 3, 2022 By Ali M.
The Gunners visit Old Trafford on Sunday as they look to beat an in-form Red Devils to make it six wins out of six this season.

Saturday was an action-packed day of football, with all but two of the Premier League's Big Six taking to the field. However, the headline game of the weekend will take place on Sunday as English giants Manchester United and Arsenal prepare to face off in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

All eyes will be on this clash and a huge factor behind that is the Gunners' brilliant start to the campaign. While the manager and players have all played down suggestions of a title push, and understandably so, Arteta's men enter this clash as the league leaders.

So far, Jesus and Co. have played five games and have won all five, meaning they are the only remaining team with a perfect record. Not all of those victories were pretty – the 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace and 2-1 comeback at home to Fulham spring to mind – but Arsenal have done just enough to triumph in every single outing.

Their midweek success over Aston Villa was the perfect example. The English heavyweight dominated Gerrard's struggling side but were leading by only a goal for most of the game. After Douglas Luiz grabbed a surprise equalizer straight after coming on for the Birmingham side, the Gunners went up the other end and scored almost immediately through Gabriel Martinelli before eventually winning 2-1.

And with defending champions Manchester City, who are seen as the favorites for the English top-flight crown this season as well, drawing 1-1 away to Aston Villa on Saturday, Arsenal have the golden opportunity to move four points clear at the top.

However, winning at Old Trafford is a feat easier said than done regardless of Manchester United's form. Additionally, Arteta's side enters this clash with an injury crisis, mainly in midfield, as the visitors could be without at least five first-team players – more on that later. Can the London side come away with the three points regardless?

Unfortunately for the traveling side, the Red Devils enter this game in form as well. In fact, Ten Hag's horrible start to the Premier League campaign is slowly fading from memory, with the 20-time English champions winning their last three games in the competition.

It was just a few weeks ago when Bruno Fernandes and Co. found themselves bottom of the league, having lost their first two fixtures of 2022/23, conceding six goals while failing to score on their own merit.

First came the 2-1 loss at home to Brighton, with Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen making their debuts but failing to impress. Then came the 4-0 thrashing away to Brentford, with the Manchester giants conceding all four in the first half.

However, since then, Manchester United have turned things around. In Matchweek 3, they hosted bitter rivals Liverpool and were expected to lose to Klopp's men, but after a gallant display from the new center-back partnership of Martinez and Varane, Ten Hag led his side to a 2-1 victory. After that came back-to-back 1-0 victories against Southampton and—most recently—Leicester.

As a result, the hosts could move within three points of Arsenal, who will retain the top spot this round regardless of what happens due to Man City's draw. Additionally, they could climb to fourth with a victory if Brighton suffer a slip-up against Leicester.

It should be noted that both Manchester United and Arsenal will also be in action this midweek as they are set to kick off their Europa League campaign this Thursday. However, while Arteta's men face FC Zurich in their opener, the Red Devils will be in for a tough test as they will welcome Real Sociedad to the Theatre of Dreams, meaning they will have one eye on Thursday when they host the Gunners.

Team news

Manchester United: All eyes will be on mega-money signing Antony and whether the Brazilian winger will make his debut against Arsenal, be it in the starting lineup or off the bench. Casemiro, meanwhile, having made two appearances off the bench, will be hopeful of his first start. Martin Dubravka will be part of the subs. However, Anthony Martial is out while Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissake will face late fitness tests.

Arsenal: As mentioned earlier, the Gunners are enduring an injury crisis, especially in midfield, as Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are both sidelined. Meanwhile, despite making the trip to Manchester, Oleksandr Zinchenko is unlikely to start even if he makes the bench, meaning Sambi Lokonga should deputize alongside Granit Xhaka. Additionally, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale are doubts after picking up knocks in Wednesday's 2-1 win vs. Aston Villa.

Key stats

  • Manchester United have won only once in their last eight encounters with Arsenal.

  • However, that sole victory occurred when the Red Devils last hosted the Gunners, beating them 3-2 at Old Trafford last season.

  • The north London giants have won only once in their last 15 trips to the Theatre of Dreams in the Premier League.

  • However, that one victory was orchestrated by none other than Mikel Arteta, leading his side to a 1-0 triumph in his first Old Trafford outing.

  • Arsenal look to win their first six games of an English top-flight season in 75 years, having last achieved this feat in 1947/48, with the Gunners going on to win the league that season.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has started Manchester United's last three games on the bench. However, with seven goals from his last eight run-ins with Arsenal, the Portuguese icon could get his first start since the 4-0 defeat to Brentford.
