With just a handful of games remaining, Milan are looking to grab as many points as possible to secure a decent standing at the end of the season.

Preview: The Rossoneri look to make it three straight wins against the Grifone

It's not something that many fans would have anticipated after last season's miraculous turnaround, but Milan has yet to win three consecutive games in Serie a all season. They can do so against Genoa, a side that they have not lost to since back in September 2008, but due to their dismal form this season, their opponents are just three points behind them in the league table in 13th place.

Additionally, despite their 39 points, Gian Piero Gasperini's men have fared well at home, with seven victories out of ten at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. However, Milan, who are well out of contention for a Champions League berth, could close the gap on city rivals Inter to just five points with a win against the Grifone. The Nerazzurri were held to a 2-2 draw with Bologna and sit just eight ahead of the 11th-placed Rossoneri in fifth--showing how close the teams ranging from just outside the top four to fourteenth place are presently.

Indeed, should Milan lose, they might find themselves slipping into a dismal 13th place, something that they obviously will be keen to avoid as they look to salvage whatever remains of their disappointing domestic campaign. In terms of available personnel, coach Clarence Seedorf will be missing Ghanaian midfielders Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari due to injury. Striker Stephan El Shaarawy, who is rumoured to be close to making his long-awaited return won't be available to face off against his former side, and young defender Mattia De Sciglio is another who is still out to fitness issues of his own.

However, Riccardo Montolivo will be expected to return to action after his own injury absence, whilst Seedorf will probably utilize the attacking midfield trio of Adel Taarabt, Kaka, and Keisuke Honda supporting Mario Balotelli as the lone striker. The Japanese international has yet to find his footing so far in Serie A after his much heralded arrival from Russian outfit CSKA Moscow, but had plenty to say in an interview earlier this week with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I knew that I would run into some difficulties [here in Italy], but this is the club I've always dreamed about [playing for]," he stated yesterday to reporters.

Honda, who has yet to score for his new side, was still optimistic about his progress so far: "I feel that my first goal in Serie A will come soon. I just have to be patient and I came here to Milan to become a champion."

As for hosts Genoa, the Grifone will have available pretty much a full strength lineup, with the only notable absences being midfielders Matuzalem and Juraj Kucka, and young Croatian defender Sime Vrsaljko. Former Rossoneri striker Alberto Gilardino, whose goal cancelled out Kaka's strike earlier this year, will certainly be keen to get himself on the score-sheet again as the past two seasons have seen the club finish in 17th place, just one away from relegation.

Unlike in previous campaigns where Milan usually had a comfortable points advantage over their upcoming opponents, their disappointing showing with just 42 points has seen them win as many games as they have lost--11. Hence, this match could be a lot closer than ever, but if history is any indicator, the result should be in favour of the Diavolo.
