Arsenal linked with move for highly-rated Serie A midfielder as Arteta eyes further additions

August 9, 2022 By Ali M.
The Gunners could bring in another midfielder between now and transfer deadline day, with Edu and Co. reportedly holding talks with his club.

Unlike other clubs, Arsenal kicked off their 2022/23 Premier League campaign with a win, triumphing on Friday in the English top-flight's first fixture. However, despite this, the Gunners still plan on strengthening their squad even further.

The north London giants visited Crystal Palace in the opening round and returned from Selhurst Park with a 2-0 victory. Summer signings Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko made their debuts while Fabio Vieira, the club's other marquee addition, was sidelined due to injury.

Additionally, Emile Smith Rowe was absent from the squad but despite having two key midfielders out through injury, Arsenal could recruit another before the window shuts close. In fact, according to reports out of Italy, Edu and Co. have their sights on one of the most highly-rated maestros in Serie A.

That player is none other than Sandro Tonali, who played a key role in AC Milan's title success last season. Given his importance to the Scudetto holders, the Rossoneri are said to be against the idea of selling the Italian.

The reigning champions kick off their title defense this Saturday and will need the 22-year-old at the San Siro if they are to successfully pull this off. Nonetheless, Arsenal have held talks with AC Milan and a price has been named for Tonali.

This is according to Enrico Camelio, telling that despite the reluctance to sell, an offer of €55M ($56M) could change AC Milan's stance as that fee could secure them two more signings ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

"Milan and Arsenal met and talked about Tonali," the journalist said.

"The Rossoneri have declared that the midfielder is not transferable, but if a proposal for €55 million arrives, Milan could sell him and make two purchases."

While Arteta's midfield options have improved over the summer, the Spaniard still lacks cover for the defensive midfield role. Thomas Partey currently holds that slot, but the Ghanaian has a concerning injury record, and with Sambi Lokonga being trialed as a no.8 during the pre-season, a deal for Tonali could prove smart.
