La Roja will have to begin their quest to win a first-ever Women's EURO title without one of their key players. Meanwhile, Germany will aim to win another title but will face a tough test against Denmark.

Preview: Spain vs Finland

Given their recent rise in the rankings, there is a lot of buzz about Spain's chances at this summer's Women's EURO tournament. La Roja were dealt a huge blow due to an unfortunate injury to Barcelona star Alexia Putellas, which comes in the heels of fellow star striker Jenni Hermoso also missing out due to a knee injury as well, but they will need to put that behind them quickly if they finally want to make a big splash on the world stage.

Jorge Vilda's team are in a very tough quartet, as they also have Germany, who are the most decorated side in this competition, as well as Denmark, who finished as runners-up five years ago, for company. As such, with Germany and Denmark going head to head in the other fixture on Friday evening, with at least one of those teams set to drop points, the onus will be on Spain to make sure they can kick off proceedings on a high note.

Spain come into this contest in solid, albeit not exactly sparkling form. They have won three and drawn the other three of their last six matches, including a one-all result against Italy in a warm-up match just prior to this tournament. There is much concern about how the absences of Hermoso and now Putellas will impact their attacking options, especially if they can manage to get out of a very tough Group B alongside Germany and Denmark, but first will be to ensure they do not get bogged down against Finland.

Finland, for their part, are featuring at their fourth EURO championship and are certainly no strangers to pulling off surprises. Back in 2005, the Helmarit reached the semi-finals by posting some impressive results against fellow Scandinavian sides Sweden and Denmark. This summer, they are one of five Scandinavian representatives featuring in England, alongside Iceland, Norway, as well as the aforementioned Sweden and Denmark.

Their form has been quite disappointing coming into this contest, with just one win from their last six, but time and time again, observers have seen teams come into major competitions in poor form only to really come to life under the bigger lights. Will Spain be able to successfully navigate through a tough quartet without not just one, but two star players? Or will Finland end their frustrating hoodoo against their upcoming opponents - which has seen them fail to win any of their last six meetings - and potentially put themselves in a good position to maybe even get out of their group?

Spain: The biggest absences for Spain are arguably Jenni Hermoso and Alexia Putellas, and it will be interesting to see how La Roja do manage to cope in terms of attack without two of their key players.

Finland: No notable injuries or suspensions.

Preview: Germany vs Denmark

This arguably will be one of the big clashes of this summer's event, with two heavyweights of women's football, Germany and Denmark facing off in a game that could decide who finishes at the top in Group B. Interestingly, the two sides will be also renewing acquaintances in this competition. The last time Germany and Denmark locked horns was back at EURO 2017, during which the Danes won 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Despite their status as the huge favorites, Germany have not been in the best form as of late. Die Nationalelf were flawless to conclude 2021, with six wins from their six games, but 2022 has been an entirely different story for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side. Along with drawing Spain and losing to England and Canada, arguably the most shocking result was Germany, who are presently ranked fifth in the world, losing to Serbia, who have never qualified for a World Cup or a EURO tournament during an April qualifying match for the upcoming 2023 World Cup.

That being said, they did rebound recently with a 7-0 demolition of Switzerland in a friendly match prior to this tournament, and there are high expectations of this side, despite the presence of other major contenders such as France, Spain, England, Sweden, and reigning champs the Netherlands. Germany have won this competition a whopping eight times, and while they have not won it since 2013, they also have never gone more than two tournaments without winning the prize.

Denmark, meanwhile, made a very impressive run five years ago, but were beaten by the Netherlands in the final. De rød-hvide have experienced mixed results so far in 2022, with four wins and three losses in their seven matches prior to this upcoming tie, and were recently beaten 2-1 by Norway. They will really be hoping that Chelsea star Pernille Harder, who is the team's all-time top goal-scorer and a two time UEFA Women's of the Year recipient, will be able to help inspire the team in what looks to be the first real test of their title credentials on Friday evening.
