After missing out on top priority targets so far this summer, it is time for David Moyes and Ed Woodward at Manchester United to come back to reality if they are to make much needed additions to the squad.
So far this summer, the only player Manchester United have bought is young Uruguayan left-back, Guillermo Varelo who arrives at Old Trafford as a relatively unknown quantity. This is David Moyes’ first summer transfer window as the manager of the Red Devils and so far, the Scot has not been able to make a marquee signing which was promised to the club’s fans.

At the start of the transfer window, the reigning English champions were hotly linked with a move for Thiago Alcantara who reportedly, had agreed personal terms with the club. However, in came Bayern Munich with Pep Guardiola and the young Spaniard chose to sign for the European champions.

Eager to make that marquee signing, Moyes turned back his attention to Cesc Fabregas. However, the former Everton manager’s advances have so far been met with rejection which simply means that with just a few weeks left in the new season, it is time for the club to stop thinking about a marquee signing and bring in players who really want to play for the club.

Man United’s persistence in securing a deal for the former Arsenal man seems to signal that they have been given encouragement by Fabregas’ camp, however the transfer never looked likely to materialise.

Fabregas might not have been quite a success at Camp Nou but it is hard to see the Spain international leave Barcelona so soon.

Moreover, the Spanish giants are also not keen to lose out on another star player having already lost young Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich. Cesc’s allegiance in the past with Arsenal might be another factor which might prove to be a hurdle in the transfer happening.

In recent days, United have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger and Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan. In all fairness, the two gentlemen represent farfetched targets as it is unlikely to see them leave their respective clubs. The case for the latter is very unlikely because Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to let go of another midfielder after Mario Gotze jumped ship in a rather controversial manner.

Schweinsteiger on the other hand is probably one of the best in his position and currently plays for a side which under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola is destined for greater things in the near future. It is highly implausible that either the club or the player would fancy a move to Manchester United or for that matter to any other club in the world.

Rather than going for marquee signings, ones that cover the front pages of regional newspapers, the Red Devils need to become more realistic about their ambitions in the transfer market. With the World Cup on the horizon, not many established stars would like to leave their respective clubs and jeopardise their chances of bringing glory to the house.

However, there are quite a few players who will surely see United as a place where they can be under the radar of the managers of their respective national sides. For instance, Yohan Cabaye’s place in the national team might no more be a given following the arrival of Didier Deschamps as the manager of France and also due to the circus that is Newcastle United. The midfielder might not be the glamorous signing but if fully fit, can help Moyes’s side in so many ways.

Marouanne Fellaini is crucial to the chances of Belgium playing in Brazil next season and with Everton’s future not certain following the arrival of Roberto Martinez, the midfielder should be Moyes’ priority as he offers goals at an astonishing rate for a midfielder.
Luis Gustavo’s place in Bayern Munich is under threat following the arrival of Pep Guardiola and although VfL Wolfsburg are very much interested in the Brazilian, United should take their chances on a player who showed a lot of versatility by playing as a defensive midfielder and sometimes as a centre back last season.

Time seems to be running out for Moyes with the 2013-2014 Premier League campaign set to kick off in less than two weeks and the former Everton man might do himself a favour by focusing on more realistic transfers rather than dreaming of a marquee signing.
