Liverpool go top but drop points in the title race

Advantage Man City as Liverpool drop crucial points in Premier League title race

May 7, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds are on the brink of losing the title race to their rivals following Saturday's draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool's charge to win a quadruple this season has been dealt a massive blow following Saturday night's draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds, who currently sit first in the Premier League table on goal difference, dropped two important points in the 1-1 draw at Anfield and could go three points behind Manchester City by the end of the gameweek.

The Champions League finalists remain the only club in Europe's top five leagues to be in contention for a quadruple. On Saturday, they had the opportunity to get closer to the Premier League title when Spurs came to town and with City playing 24 hours later, a win was non-negotiable for Jurgen Klopp's men. However, things did not go according to the script for the Merseysiders who ended the first half of clash in stalemates before having to fight back for a point.

After both Van Dijk and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had hit the posts in the first half, Heung-min Son broke the deadlock in the 55th minute to put Tottenham Hotspur ahead with a simple tap-in. Liverpool subsequently fought hard to get into the game and were eventually rewarded thanks to in-form Luis Diaz's deflected strike in the 74th minute.

With Manchester City taking on Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, the Reds momentarily ciimbed to the top of the table due to their superior goal difference. Both clubs are now tied on 83 points and a win for the Citizens could see them establish a three-point lead with three matches to go. The eague remains the only competition that Pep Guardiola's side has an active shot at winning and, as a result, many have tipped them to excel against the Magpies at Etihad.

Earlier this week, the Manchester club was denied the opportunity to make back to back Champions League final appearances after leading Real Madrid 4-3 ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu. A historic 3-1 win by Los Blancos was enough to the send the Premier League's defending champions packing.
