After 13,589 days, Trabzonspor are champions of Turkey!

Fans of Trabzonspor went wild on Saturday night after witnessing their side secure the Turkish Super League title for the first time since 1984. The Black Sea Storm were confirmed as league champions following their 2-2 draw with Antalyaspor inside the Medical Park Stadyumu.

Ahead of the night's encounter, Trabzonspor were nine points ahead of second-placed Fenerbahce. Their better head-to-head record also meant that a draw would be enough to hand them the title with three matches left to play. With that at the back of the minds of the players, they had the best of starts when Andreas Cornelius opened the scoring in the first three minutes.

Alassane Ndao subsequently managed an equalizer for Antalyspor in the 51st minute before goalkeeper Uğurcan Cakir denied Fredy the chance to put the visitors ahead from the spot. It looked as if Trabzonspor were set to secure the maximum points when Dorukhan Toköz got their second in the 62nd minute but parity was restored by the visitors in the 80th minute through Haji Wright.

Needless to say, the draw was more than enough for Trabzonspor as scores of supporters stormed the pitch right after the whistle was blown for full-time.

Trabzonspor have now won seven championships, including five in a row from 1975-76 and one more in 1983-84. They are one of just six teams to have ever won the Turkish championship. After Istanbul Basaksehir's historic first title win in 2019-20, Besiktas won the trophy last season.
