The 37-year-old and his partner Georgina Rodriguez are mourning the death of their newborn baby.

Manchester United are gearing up for one of their biggest games of the season, with the Red Devils set to face bitter rivals Liverpool later today. However, the 20-time English champions announced that they will make the trip to Anfield without their talisman forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The reason for the Portuguese icon's absence is understandable yet heartbreaking. On Monday, the day before the clash with Klopp's men, the 37-year-old took to social media to announce a family tragedy: the death of their newborn son.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner and partner Georgina Rodriguez were expecting twins – a girl and a boy – but sadly only one survived at birth. A heartbroken Ronaldo wrote a short but heartfelt message, asking for privacy during this difficult time.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away," the attacker wrote on Instagram.

"It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support.

"We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

"Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

Soon after, Manchester United announced that their top scorer has been offered time off and will thus not take part in Tuesday's trip to Merseyside, writing in an official statement:

"Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time.

"As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we underline the family's request for privacy.

"Cristiano, we are all thinking of you and sending strength to the family."

The entire football fraternity united in offering their prayers and condolences to the former Real Madrid sensation. Additionally, a fan-led minute's applause will be held by both Liverpool and Manchester United fans in the 7th minute to pay tribute.

As for the Red Devils, they will look to get the better of Salah and Co. amid their heated top four race. The visitors are currently fifth in the table but are level on points with sixth-placed Arsenal despite having played a game more.
