Elsewhere, Dortmund returned to winning ways while Leverkusen slipped up amid the heated top four race.

Matchday 29 in the Bundesliga has finally come to a wrap. The latest round in the German top-flight got underway on Friday with Dortmund's trip to Stuttgart, which they won 2-0, and carried on until Sunday, ending with RB Leipzig's brilliant 3-0 win over fellow top-four chasers Hoffenheim.

However, BVB and Die Roten Bullen weren't the only German giants to triumph in the recent fixtures. Saturday saw league leaders and defending champions Bayern Munich take to the field, with Lewandowski and Co. narrowly beating Augsburg 1-0 to make amends for their UEFA Champions League quarterfinals 1st leg defeat against Villarreal.

Freiburg also enjoyed a narrow but crucial victory, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 to maintain their push for UEFA Champions League football. Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, were unable to clinch the three points over the weekend, drawing nil-nil with Bochum. Bundesliga – top headlines

  • Wolfsburg enjoyed a brilliant victory over Arminia on Saturday, with Maximilian Arnold getting his name on the scoresheet over the weekend. The German midfielder's effort came courtesy of a free kick, his seventh in the competition since the start of the 2017-18 season, with no other player scoring as many free kick goals in the Bundesliga during that time frame.

  • Bayern Munich's 1-0 victory over Augsburg saw Thomas Muller register his 300th win in the Bundesliga. While two other players have reached this landmark before the 2014 World Cup winner, he is the first outfield player to reach this German top-flight feat.

  • Union Berlin locked horns with Hertha Berlin, cruising to a brilliant 4-1 victory in the Berlin Derby. To put this into perspective, this was Die Eisernen's third consecutive victory over Hertha, a feat they were never able to achieve in their previous eight encounters.

  • In Freiburg's trip to Eintracht Frankfurt, Nils Petersen came off the bench to help the visitors to a 2-1 victory, scoring the winning goal shortly after the hour mark. Additionally, the German striker made history as this was the seventh goal he scored against Die Adler as a substitute, with no player netting more frequently against one club as a sub previously.

  • In RB Leipzig's 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim, Nkunku continued his brilliant form, scoring the opening goal before setting up Szoboszlai for the third. This has taken his goal involvement this season to 28 (17 goals, 11 assists), a feat no other Frenchman has achieved since 2004/05.

Top matches to watch in the Bundesliga: April 16-17, 2022

Dortmund vs Wolfsburg: BVB bounced back from their upsetting defeat against RB Leipzig, beating Stuttgart on Friday in the recent round. This means Marco Rose's second-placed side now enjoy an eight-point cushion over third-placed Leverkusen. Next up for Dortmund is a clash with Wolfsburg, a team that has lost three out of their last five matches. However, the visitors enter this tie on the back of a lovely 4-0 victory over Arminia, which should have given them a lift.

Arminia vs Bayern Munich: The Bavarians returned to winning ways over the weekend, beating Augsburg on Saturday ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Villarreal. Unfortunately, that match was a slim victory for the league leaders, proving that even Bayern Munich are capable of dips in form. With this tie coming after their 2nd leg quarterfinal showdown with the Yellow Submarine, it remains to be seen what the talking point will be for their Arminia trip. Regardless, the home side are in the relegation zone, meaning Lewandowski and Co. should enter this tie with confidence.

Leverkusen vs RB Leipzig: This is the game to watch as this clash will see third and fourth in the Bundesliga lock horns. Leverkusen will boast the home advantage, but form is not on their side, with the third-placed side heading into this tie on the back of a goalless draw. RB Leipzig, who are only a point behind in fourth, triumphed in their most recent outing, beating Hoffenheim 3-0 to move within touching distance of Die Werkself. Will Nkunku and Co. beat their rivals and leapfrog them into third? Tune in this weekend to find out.
