The Bavarians were stunned by the underdogs in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

For the first time since 2017, Bayern Munich have lost an away game in the UEFA Champions League. The Bavarians, who were much favored ahead of their trip to Villarreal, were subjected to an agonizing 1-0 defeat ahead of the second leg encounter at Allianz Arena, ending their run of 25 away games without defeat.

Julian Nagelsmann's men were second best in the night's encounter and it was barely a contest with the hosts putting on another impressive show. Both sides had an unbeaten streak to protect, with the former boasting of a seven-game winning run against Spanish opponents while the latter were unbeaten at home in nine outings.

It took Villarreal just eight minutes to open the scoring, with Arnaut Danjuma redirecting Dani Parejo's shot past Manuel Neuer to give his side a deserving lead. Four minutes before the half-time break, Unai Emery's men were put two goals up by Francis Coquelin but a review by the Video Assistant Referee ruled the goal for the offside.

In the second half, Bayern Munich barely threatened the goal of the Spanish club who continued to push for a second goal. However, they failed in all their attempts and will hold onto their slender advantage ahead of the second leg. With the result, the Germans suffered their first defeat in the Champions League this season.

Relatively, Villarreal became the first side to keep a clean sheet against Bayern in the competition since Liverpool in February 2019. The game's outcome also ended Bayern's run of 30 consecutive games in which they had netted at least once.
