Ligue 1 Round-up after March 6 games

Ligue 1 Round-up: Nice hand PSG second loss in three games

March 7, 2022 By Oscar Rojas
The league leaders succumbed to the red and black side in an exciting match which opened a window for a surprise in the title race.

The recently concluded weekend gave Ligue 1 fans quite a few items to discuss, starting with PSG's defeat at the hands of Nice. The red and black side kept Messi, Neymar and Di Maria away from the net and claimed a huge victory with a late goal by Andy Delort. Les Parisiens still have a handsome lead at the top, but Nice's win showed some chinks in PSG's armor for other teams to take advantage of.

The teams battling for a spot in European competitions have also kept the race interesting. Rennes, Nantes, Lyon, Monaco and even Lille are involved in that race, and with eleven games left for each club, things should really become even more tricky.

Here's all you need to know regarding Ligue 1's most recent matchday.

Top five teams in Ligue 1 up to March 6

As previously stated, PSG are top of the league with a 13-point difference against Nice, which makes their win against Les Parisiens last weekend so relevant. Nice leapfrogged Marseille in their quest to get closer to PSG, while also getting a bit away from Rennes, who are still fourth with 46 points. Strasbourg completes the top five teams with 44 points to their name, with Nantes and Lille less than a win away from them.

Who are the top three goalscorers in Ligue 1?

Wissam Ben Yedder is still the league's top scorer despite not being able to find the back of the net this past weekend. Ben Yedder's woes gave Kylian Mbappé a chance to get closer to him and sharing the runner-up spot in the goalscoring department with Rennes' ace Gaetan Laborde, both with 14 goals.

Top Ligue 1 headlines, stats, and other facts

Moussa Dembelé keeps Lyon involved in race for European competitions: The French ace added one more goal to his tally en route to leading Lyon to a 4-1 win in their Friday evening match against Lorient. More than that, Dembelé's form during 2022 has been outstanding, as he has found the back of the net five times in the year, more than any other striker in Europe's top five leagues during that period.

Lille's rise capped by impressive form in front of goal: The defending champions have shown the kind of football that led them to win the title last season in recent weeks, with three wins in their last four matches. The team's performances in front of goal have seen them rise through the ranks with an impressive accuracy, which has seen them score 24 out of their 37 goals during the first halves of their games, more than any other Ligue 1 club this season.

Marseille show woeful form in worst moment of the season: Marseille chose the worst time to lose their impressive run, and the consequence of their actions has seen them drop to third in the competition. Right now, the light blue and white team has lost two in a row for the first time since last month, where they were defeated for three straight games. There may still be hope for Sampaoli's men, but the only way to turn their fortunes around is to win matches from now on.

Top Ligue 1 matches to watch on March 11-13, 2022

Montpellier vs Nice - The second-best team in the tournament will travel to face the struggling Montpellier, a team that have lost four out of their last five. It seems like this game should be a walk in the park for Nice, but Christoph Galtier and his team will try to prove that they can build something good out of their win against PSG last weekend and keep their slim but real title chances alive.

PSG vs Bordeaux - Les Parisiens will see the end of a crucial week when they host Bordeaux. Their fate in the UEFA CL will have been decided by the time this game is played, and in the event of a midweek loss, this match could be crucial for Mauricio Pochettino's chances of keeping the job. As for Bordeaux, Les Girondins are right in the middle of a grueling battle to avoid relegation, and it seems like their chances of making it out of relegation spots this weekend seems far-fetched.

Brest vs Olympique Marseille - L'OM need to bounce back as soon as possible if they want to finish the season in second place...or higher. To accomplish that, Jorge Sampaoli's men will have to find a way to beat Brest, one of the teams that had one of the best starts in the league but are now struggling to find their best form.
