The Estádio José Alvalade was absolutely electric at full time despite the heavy loss as the home supporters gave their team a spine-chilling standing ovation.

Sporting CP's showdown with Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 match-up did not go down well.

The Primeira Liga giants hosted the Premier League champions in their first encounter and were keen on getting a result in front of their home fans. However, things went horribly wrong for Rúben Amorim's men as they went 4-0 down before even half-time.

Riyad Mahrez opened the goalscoring for the visitors after only seven minutes of play. Ten minutes later, Bernardo Silva doubled their lead, with the Portuguese superstar completing his brace in the 44th minute after Phil Foden made it 3-0 shortly after the half-an-hour mark.

The second half was all about game management from Guardiola's ruthless side, but the Cityzens did have time to bag another goal, as Raheem Sterling got his name on the scoresheet in the 58th minute en route to Man City's 5-0 thrashing of the Lions.

What does this mean for the Lisbon giants? First of all, they are all but out of Europe as they will head to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg needing to overturn an impossible 5-0 deficit. Additionally, the reigning Primeira Liga champions are in grave danger of losing their crown as they currently sit in second, trailing league leaders Porto by six points.

So how did the Sporting CP fans react to that 5-0 defeat at full-time? In absolute stunning fashion. The home support continued cheering the players on the pitch until the final whistle and gave them and the coaches a breathtaking and spine chilling standing ovation. Sporting CP might not have won the game, but the love and dedication from their supporters won everyone's heart.
