Ligue 1 Roundup after February 6 games

Ligue 1 Round-up: PSG extend lead with Messi leading the pack

February 7, 2022 By Oscar Rojas
The league leaders continued with their dominant pace, this time defeating the defending champions with a goal from one of their brightest stars.

The recently concluded weekend gave Ligue 1 fans quite a few items to discuss, starting with PSG's impressive pace that could see them crowned as champions well before the end of the season. The team led by Mauricio Pochettino took advantage of a disappointing performance by Lille to add more points to their lead and to gain more confidence ahead of their crucial clash against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Added to that, Nice's loss this weekend paved the way for Marseille to recover the runner-up spot with some key games left for both teams this season.

Two historic sides also made some headlines this weekend, as Monaco got closer to the top five with a crucial win and Saint-Etienne came from behind to claim three vital points in their battle to avoid relegation. Lyon, on the other hand, continued their shaky pace and conceded a loss facing Monaco in what could be a key result when the season comes to an end.

Here's all you need to know regarding Ligue 1's most recent matchday.

Top five teams in Ligue 1 up to February 7

As previously stated, PSG are top of the league, but they are thirteen points clear at the top thanks to Nice's loss and Marseille's win. Strasbourg kept the fourth spot to themselves with a tight win over Nantes, while Rennes kept themselves in the top five with a two-nil victory over Brest.

Who are the top three goalscorers in Ligue 1?

Wissam Ben Yedder is still the league's top scorer, now with a two-goal lead over Jonathan David. The former Sevilla man scored Monaco's second goal against Lyon, giving his side more breathing space and a boost to fight for a spot among the top five clubs. The third place in the goalscorers' lists belongs to PSG's Kylian Mbappé, who found the back of the net in Les Parisiens' 5-1 win over Lille.

Top Ligue 1 headlines, stats, and other facts

PSG enjoy longest unbeaten run in Top 5 European leagues: The league leaders are thirteen points clear off their nearest rivals, and their unbeaten run of fourteen games in their domestic competition (9 wins, five draws), is the best among teams playing in the Top 5 European leagues. With those numbers, it's hard to think why coach Pochettino has faced so much pressure while handling a team that has only lost once in 23 matches.

Ben Yedder, most influential Ligue 1 player in 2022: The French footballer is enjoying his best form with Monaco this season, and when it comes to the current year, there has been no player with a major influence in his team's performances. So far, Ben Yedder has scored four times and handed out six assists, making him the most decisive player in the entire league since the year began.

Saint-Etienne ready to bounce back and avoid relegation?: The most-winning team in Ligue 1 history is still ranked 20th this season, but two wins in a row have seen their fans hoping for an epic comeback. The green and white team scored three times in less than ten minutes to win a second game in a row, keeping them one point away from avoiding relegation. There are plenty of games left in the campaign, but will Les Verts continue with this form and save the team's name?

Top Ligue 1 matches on February 11-13, 2022

*Games set to take place after the international break comes to an end.

PSG vs Rennes - The leaders will face the fifth-best team in the league with one eye on this clash and the other on their UCL meeting next week. Claiming a win here will be key to get in perfect shape to the game against Real Madrid, but avoiding injuries to some of their finest players will also be crucial, which could force coach Pochettino to rotate his squad ahead of one of their biggest games in the campaign.

Lyon vs Nice - The third-best team in the league wants to go back to winning ways next weekend, but facing the up and coming Lyon will not make things easy for them. Nice can still be considered as title contenders, but losing two in a row would do serious damage to their options of finishing among the top three teams, especially if they lost to one of the teams that made the most out of the recently concluded transfer window.

Metz vs Olympique Marseille - The current league runners-up are ready to fight for that spot and an eventual lead in the league, but to keep themselves in the race, beating Metz should be out of the question. Les Grenats are currently 18th in the competition, and even if they will host L'Om next weekend, they will have to put up one of their best performances of the season to even think about earning a draw.
