Lukaku's interview causes waves

Romelu Lukaku finds himself in hot water after recent remarks

December 31, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
The Belgian star gave a recent interview to Sky Italia, and it's safe to say that some his comments certainly haven't impressed people at Chelsea.

Earlier this year, Romelu Lukaku made a huge return to Chelsea, with the Blues forking over $134 million (£97.5 million) to bring him back to Stamford Bridge, ten years after signing him in 2011.

The Belgian ace has scored seven times in 18 appearances so far for Thomas Tuchel's side, and many Blues fans are hoping that he'll be able to play a big part as Chelsea seek not only to defend their Champions League crown but also win the Premier League.

However, any goodwill fans certainly have towards Lukaku will certainly be shaken up following his latest comments in an interview with Sky Italia. Although filmed earlier this year, it was broadcast recently, coming out just hours before the Blues are set to welcome Liverpool in a crunch clash.

Here is a snippet of the interview that's really causing all sorts of buzz:

In the longer interview, Lukaku discusses several things, including his "wish to return to Inter" while he's still in top shape, as well as lays bare his frustration with life at Stamford Bridge. Namely, he didn't hold back in discussing his annoyance with Thomas Tuchel and the German's decision to change formation, which has led to a drop in game-time. Injuries haven't helped, but indeed, since returning from injury in November, Lukaku has only been used sparingly, with Kai Havertz deployed as a false number nine on multiple occasions.

In addition, Lukaku also claimed that Chelsea were his "fourth choice" club and also advised former Inter teammate Lautaro Martinez to snub any potential advances from the Blues in the upcoming transfer windows.

Reports indicate that Tuchel isn't impressed with his player's comments, and Inter fans aren't swayed either by the player's declaration of love for the club, nor by his apology to the Nerazzurri faithful.

It'll be very interesting to see what develops and if Lukaku's interview will result in some further repercussions, or if the club and player will just look to put this behind them and focus on bigger tasks ahead in 2022.
