The newly-appointed German tactician revealed that he will not go out of his way to convince a player to remain at Old Trafford.

With Paul Pogba set to be out of contract this summer, the Frenchman's future at Man United has been a major point of contention among the fan base.

Having left the club for nothing back in 2012 to join Juventus, the midfielder later returned to Old Trafford for a club-record $116.4M fee. However, with his deal being up this summer, and with there being little to no suggestion that he will sign an extension, fans fear that their mega-signing could walk out the Theatre of Dream doors for free once again.

Previously, Solskjaer was the man who faced all the questions regarding the player's future and how the Red Devils plan on handling this situation. However, Ralf Rangnick is currently at the helm and the German tactician has just given his thoughts on the matter.

The interim boss gave a frank and stern response on this topic, insisting that he will not go out of his way to make any wantaway player remain in Manchester as no one should be convinced to stay at a club of Man United's pedigree. In fact, the former RB Leipzig man stressed that the desire to stay at Old Trafford should come from the player himself, not the board.

"Players have to want to play and stay at a big club like Manchester United," Rangnick stated, as per the Daily Mail.

"If a player does not want to play for a club like Manchester United medium or long-term, I don't think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

"I don't think anyone in the club should try to convince a player to stay."

Whether this is a tactic from Rangnick, an ultimatum with the goal of getting Pogbo to commit his future, or whether he is being truly honest remains unclear. Given that many Man Utd fans and some former players have grown tired of the antics from the midfielder and his infamous agent Mino Raiola, this move by the newly-appointed German boss could be cheered on.

The 2018 World Cup winner is currently in Dubai recovering from a thigh injury that will keep him out until the new calendar year. Pogba is set to have a face-to-face meeting with Rangnick, but some are suggesting that the former Serie A sensation has already played his last game for the Red Devils as the January transfer window will open prior to his return from the sidelines.

The 28-year-old has been linked with an array of clubs, including Real Madrid – though those rumors have cooled down as of late – and PSG. Furthermore, a return to Juventus has been touted as a possibility.
