Die Roten and the Black and Yellow gave fans a match for the ages that left Bayern in prime position to finish the year as league leaders.

It's time to have a look at what went down in the Bundesliga this weekend, where Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen, Freiburg and Hoffenheim kept up with their recent performances to cement their spots among the top five in the league. The only top-ranked team not to win their match this weekend was Borussia Dortmund, who lost to Bayern in a thrilling edition of Der Klassiker that finished 3-2 for Die Roten.

Elsewhere, fans of all teams enjoyed one of the most prolific weekends in front of goal, as teams found the back of the net 41 times during the weekend. That number had quite a bit of contribution with Bayer's 7-1 victory over Greuther Fürth and Freiburg's six-nil win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

There was more to talk about after this weekend's games, but we will leave you with the main talking points in the Bundesliga after 14 weekends of action.

Top five teams in the Bundesliga after December 5 games

Bayern are now four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund following their victory in Der Klassiker, and now the Black and Yellow side will have to be wary of Leverkusen's surge, which has seen them narrow the gap between these teams to three points. Freiburg continue their impressive run in the season, while Hoffenheim kept up the pace with a narrow win over Eintracht.

Who are top three goalscorers in the Bundesliga?

Robert Lewandowski bagged another brace to keep the top spot in the goalscoring ranks, but a new contender has emerged in Patrick Schick, who climbed all the way to No.2 with his performance against Greuther Furth. Norwegian striker Erling Haaland is third despite scoring once this weekend against Bayern.

Top Bundesliga headlines after Matchday 14

Lewandowski nabs two records in Bayern win against Dortmund: The Polish ace had reasons to want to prove to the world he deserved better in the Ballon D'Or gala, and what better way to do so than scoring one more brace against Borussia Dortmund this weekend. With those goals, "Lewa" became the only player in Der Klassiker history to score two or more goals against Dortmund in eight different occasions, while also becoming the player with the most away goals in Bundesliga history, surpassing the 117 goals scored by Klaus Fischer.

Freiburg makes history in blowout against Gladbach: The most surprising team in this Bundesliga season added one more milestone to their run in this campaign last weekend, when they breezed past Borussia Mönchengladbach 6-0. The Vultures became the first team since 1984 to find the back of the net five times during the first 25 minutes of a game, and the first to score six goals in the first half of a top-tier match.

Schick steers Leverkusen to record-breaking win over Greuther Furth: It was an evening to remember for Patrik Schick, as he scored a poker against Greuther Furth and became the first footballer in Bayer Leverkusen history to score four goals in a Bundesliga match. Moreover, the team also accomplished a feat for themselves, as their 7-1 victory over the recently promoted team represents the first time in which they have scored seven goals in a single top-tier match.

Top Bundesliga matches: December 10 - 12, 2021

Bayern vs Mainz 05: The league leaders continue their quest to the title against a complicated rival. Mainz 05 have been quite consistent this season, and the chances of shocking Die Roten at Allianz Arena are there, especially since the match will be played behind closed doors due to the increase of coronavirus cases in Bavaria.

Bochum vs Borussia Dortmund: The Black and Yellow will want to go back to winning ways after losing Der Klassiker, and they will try to get back on track when they travel to face Bochum. The recently promoted side has put up quite a decent season in their return to the top-tier category, which means that they will not make it easy for Haaland and Co.

Freiburg vs Hoffenheim: The game between these teams could very well give the winner a chance to finish the year in third or fourth place, as they are currently ranked fourth (Freiburg) and fifth (Hoffenheim). Both teams get to this match after convincing wins, which means this could be one of the must-watch clashes of the upcoming weekend.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayer Leverkusen: The third-ranked team will face a struggling Eintracht side with hopes to climb to second place in case Dortmund slips. On the other side of the pitch, Die Adler will want to start a run of games that ends with them in the upper half of the table, and what better way to do so than beating one of the best teams in the league so far.
