After missing out on Russia 2018, the Dutch have returned to the World Cup.

The Netherlands have returned to the World Cup for the first time since Brazil 2014 after securing a stunning victory over Norway in their final group game of the qualifying campaign. The Oranje scored two late goals to run away with a 2-0 win inside the Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam, dashing the visitor's hopes of progressing via the play-offs.

The stakes were extremely high ahead of the encounter as the host needed victory to secure a direct ticket to Qatar 2022. They approached the game occupying first position in Group G with 20 points, but were far from safety as they were trailed by Turkey and Norway who had 18 points apiece. With a rather tactical and cautious approach being the resort for both sides, the first 80 minutes of the encounter failed to produce any significant moment to alter the course of the game.

However, all indications of a potential draw were quenched by the Netherlands as they finally found a breakthrough in the 84th minute. It took none other than Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn to find the back of the net with a thunderous strike after being set-up by Danjuma. Inside the first minute of additional team, the first goalscorer and Memphis Depay combined to extend the lead of the men in orange to two after a devastating counter-attack.

Without talismanic striker Erling Haaland up top, the Norwegians struggled to produce any moment of magic in front of goal and saw their dream of to secure a historic qualification to Qatar 2022 going down the drain. This was as a result of Turkey defeating Montenegro via a 2-1 scoreline in the other encounter to assume second position on the league log.
