West Ham end City's five-year unbeaten EFL Cup run

West Ham end Man City's five-year unbeaten Carabao Cup run

October 27, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Manchester City have lost a game in the League Cup for the first time since 2016.

For the first time in five years, a new team other than Manchester City will be crowned as the winner of this season's Carabao Cup following the elimination of the Etihad outfit. Pep Guardiola's side had won the last four editions of the competition but were denied a fifth in succession following Wednesday night's defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium.

The keenly contest affair did not produce any goals despite chances being aplenty and in the end, penalty shoot-outs were used to decide the winner. Utimately, it was Foden's miss at the very beginning of the kicks that decided the game's outcome with all five takers of West Ham beating Zack Steffen in goal and finding the back of the net.

Indeed, the Hammers were genuinely outstanding. Their excellent organisation in defense proved to be their strongest suit in a night in whcih the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez all misfired for the Citizens. The London club have now been responsible for the elimination of both Manchester club in the competition so far, having defeated United 1-0 at Old Trafford in September to set up their last 16 match-up with City.

Meanwhile, the draw for the next round of the Carabao Cup is slated for October 30 with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Leicester City, and Brentford standing as the remaining clubs in the running for the trophy.
