Liverpool set multiple records with Man Utd win

All the records set as Liverpool hit Manchester United for five at Old Trafford

October 24, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds completely obliterated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men inside Old Trafford, with several records being shattered in the process.

It was devastating day for all Manchester Utd supporters and the club as they suffered one of the worst-ever defeats at the hands of a Premier League rival. The Red Devils found themselves at the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline as Liverpool entered the history books after smashing a host of records in the competition with result.

The host started off the clash on the back foot after conceeding tthe opening goal inside the first five minutes through Naby Keita. After the Malian had set the tone for the game to evolve, Diogo Jota doubled Liverpool's advantage just eight minutes later following another defensive blunder by Harry Maguire. Mohamed Salah then ensured that the Reds had a three-goal cushion before the first half break, reinforcing his side's dominance in the campaign.

It was a formality for the Merseysiders in second half as a couple more defensive mistakes led Manchester United to concede two more goals off the boots of Mohamed Salah. In-between Paul Pogba received a red card for a horrific tackle on Naby Keita who was consequently stretched off and replaced with Curtis Jones. United also had a goal ruled out after scorer Cristiano Ronaldo was deemed offside by the Video Assistant Referee.

Below are all the records set following Liverpool's big win on Sunday:

  • Mohamed Salah is the first opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford for over 18 years, since Ronaldo did so for Real Madrid back in April 2003 in the Champions League. He is the first to do so at the venue in the history of the Premier League.

  • Mohamed Salah has now scored 106 goals in the Premier League, making him now the outright top African goalscorer in the competition's history, surpassing Didier Drogba (104).

  • Mohamed Salah has become the first Liverpool player in the club's history to score in three straight away appearances at Manchester United.

  • Mohamed Salah has scored in 10 straight appearances in all competitions. Since 2017-18, he's only fourth player for a club within the big five Euro leagues to manage this, after Cristiano Ronaldo (Apr 2018), Duvan Zapata (Jan 2019) and Robert Lewandowski (three times).

  • Mohamed Salah the first Liverpool player in history to score away to United in three successive visits in all competitions. He is also only the second Liverpool player ever to score in his team's first five away league games of a season. Sam Raybould was the first player to attain the feat in 1902-03.

  • Naby Keita's opening goal is the earliest Premier League goal Liverpool have ever scored at Old Trafford.

  • Manchester United have suffered their heaviest ever defeat at home to Liverpool. It is the first time they have lost to-nil by five goals at home since February 1955 (5-0 v Man City).

  • Liverpool are only the second team in English top-flight history to win consecutive away games by a margin of five or more goals without conceding themselves, after Manchester United in February/March 1960.

  • Liverpool have won consecutive league games by five goals for only the second time in the top-flight, and first time since winning 5-0 vs Stoke City and 6-0 vs Chelsea on consecutive days in April 1935.
